Hay River Fire Department

Community Involvement

The HRFD cares for the health and safety of the citizens of Hay River.  Some of the events the HRFD hosts and participates in are:

  • HRFD Bike Rodeo – Every June, bring your children down to the firehall with their bikes and drive the course to learn and review all the bicycle rules of the road.  Lots of prizes are handed out including free bicycles.  Don’t forget your helmet!

  • Fire Prevention Week – Fire Prevention Week 2010 will be observed from Sunday, October 3rd through Saturday, October 9th.  The theme this year is Smoke Alarms: a sound you can live with.  This is a special week at the firehall.  We celebrate with a parade around town of lights and sirens to invite everyone down to the hall for the Firehall Open House.  Pictures with Sparky, a chance to check out the firetrucks and ambulances, donuts, prizes and the opportunity to thank your local firefighters.  During the week the department along with Sparky visit the schools to talk fire safety with all the kids.

  • NWT Track and Field Championships – Every year the community of Hay River is host to 1,200 athletes and coaches from across the NWT for the NWT Track and Field Championships.  The HRFD is involved in watering the track and manning the first-aid tent during the entire event.

  • Firehall tours - Would your group like a tour of the firehall hosted by Sparky and some of your local firefighters?  Contact us and arrange a firehall tour.  Every year we are lucky enough to have many of the play groups in town stop by for a visit.
